Hey guys! We’re going to kick this interview off with the essential question: how did you three meet and how did you decide to start working together?
We met at school. Andrea and Alberto were classmates and began to play as a Dj duo in school parties in Parma. We then met Luigi because of his skills in music production! We immediately felt we could be a fantastic trio. From that time we started making music, and here we are.
Which story is behind the name ’ Sunstars’?
The name comes from Luigi, he was fascinated about the “sunset” in Ibiza, so he had in mind “Sunstars” as a name, and we decided that it could work and represented us.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of working in a trio?
Actually we see a lot of advantages of working in a trio. Each of us is specialized in a different part of the track. Luigi is a great producer, he’s the one who has huge and original ideas, so we usually start our tracks with him. Andrea, having attended a music school for 9 years, is used to work on the melodic part, and Alberto works on the technical aspects, ‘cause he’s very good in add production, mixing and mastering! Travelling together is another great thing, we enjoy to DJ and to share the experience!
The disadvantages are few. Sometimes it’s difficult to agree about ideas or sounds that we try for our songs, but we always find a solution, because we have almost the same tastes about music. And another disadvantage is that we have to work three times more to achieve a goal, but we’re super positive about our future.
You guys have recently released a track on Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings, so tell us a little bit more about ‘One Time’. How long did it take you to finish it, how did you come up with the idea and how does it feel to have your release on such a big label?
The main lead comes from Luigi’s voice, he recorded it on his phone and imported it in FL. We started then working on the percussions and the drop, and in almost one month we had the final version. Probably we’ve never worked on a track as much as on “One Time”, but we are very proud about the final result. Being selected by Nicky Romero is great, it’s one of our idols, and when he played it live for the first time we were super proud about ourselves.
Due to the fact that all of you are very young, were your families and friends supportive of your decision to go into music?
This is one of the reasons we’re still together: families and friends never stopped us, they were always really supportive! A lot of people in our hometown follow us from when we were really young, we’ve worked a lot in these years and when we achieve a goal, we receive lots of beautiful messages from them!
What is the most enjoyable part of the production process for you? Mixing, arranging, composing?
Luigi said: I personally like to experiment and find the right trace to work on.
Alberto said: I’m the mixing and mastering engineer, so I love on the sound design of our tracks and bring them at the top.
Andrea said: being able to play the piano, I’m used to find chord progression and the right harmony for our breakdown.
When it comes to gear, what’s your studio like? What DAW do you use?
We’re currently working with Focal Twin6Be monitors as main reference and KRK Rocket 6 as supporting one. Luigi uses FL Studio 12, Andrea & Alberto use Logic X. We are also comfortable working on Ableton Live.
What do you think about the electronic music scene in Italy and is there anything you would like to change about it?
We think we are just a little bit on delay here in Italy respect to nations as The Netherlands and Sweden. We’ve started having Big EDM festivals few time ago. Here in Italy we are not too much collaborative as the groups of other countries are used to be, so it would be awesome to have a united scene!
In your opinion, who are the most perspective newcomers in the Italian scene?
